Getting to see how creative can be the use of bricks in architecture really impressed me and made me want to write this post.

First thing first, let us see the simplified version of the curved brick wall; we are going to talk about the crinkle crankle wall, known also as sinusoidal or wavy wall. It is a surrounding wall structure, built with alternative curves, usually used in gardens.

Egyptians originally used it as a fortification structure in ancient time.

In nowadays projects, designers use the curves and brick association in a bigger scale and in a more complex way.

In some projects, they use the standard bricks; it can be only to design a smooth curved surface or to conceive a 3D pattern with relief by turning them in different direction. In Yves Saint Laurent Museum located in Marrakesh, Morocco and designed by Studio KO, we can find these two types of brick walls.

In other projects, they add bricks that have special shapes to design a more complex envelope like it is in Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at Sydney’s UTS, designed by Frank O Ghery Partners.

If you want to know more about architecture or ID, wait for the next post on this blog.
